Go, God, Go!

“Our goal should be to be God’s number one cheerleader in this life.” —Seventeenth century Carmelite monk Brother Lawrence, from Practicing the Presence of God.

My daughter was a cheerleader in high school. When I think back to those days, I remember how hard she worked. She and her cheer squad would spend hours creating and practicing cheers to perfection. When you stop and think about the intent behind a cheerleader, you see it's threefold.

First, they want to incite the crown to engage, support, yell, scream, clap and whistle, all to support the players on the team. Second, they cheer for the team itself, letting them know they believe in them and want them to win. They’re encouraging every step of the way. Third, they cheer to show the competition that the squad’s team is better.

All this is done as a selfless act, just being a person who roots for another.

If I'm God's cheerleader, I want to yell "Go, God, Go!" I want to see him do his next great thing, heal the next disease, bring peace, part seas, bring manna from heaven, fire from the sky and overcome the enemy.

I love it when he does this stuff. The Bible says when God performed miracles, the crowds were in awe.

I can hear them gasp for breath, awestruck by what they saw. I can see them giving each other high-fives and hear joy and laughter and cheers fill the air.

I can almost hear them saying, “Do it again, God!”

I can almost see them puffing their chests at the opponents, looking at them as if to say, “Have your guy top that!'

God sent his son Jesus to redeem his children and to restore the broken relationship between man and God.

In the process, many people are healed. Relationships on earth are restored, hearts are mended, fears are squelched, joy revived, purpose reignited and peace found once again.

God wins, we win!Yeah, God!Do it again!Come on team, let's cheer him on this Christmas.

Just a thought …
